Why Everyone Is Obsessed With Virgin Voyages

If you've ever thought cruises were floating retirement homes, floating frat parties, or floating stomach viruses, you're not alone. Virgin Voyages looked at the entire cruise industry and basically said, "What if we made this cool?" And honestly, they kind of did.

I've sailed Virgin Voyages 52 times in just five years, which is admittedly a little crazy. So today, I'm breaking down why people become obsessed with Virgin Voyages, what makes it different, who it's actually perfect for, and whether it's really worth the money.

What Makes Virgin Voyages Different?

The reason Virgin Voyages exploded so fast is because they understood something the cruise industry ignored for years.

A lot of younger travelers wanted the convenience of cruising without the cheesy cruise vibes.

Virgin said:

  • No water slides

  • No giant buffets

  • No screaming children

Instead, they created:

  • Boutique hotel energy

  • Rooftop lounge vibes

  • Elevated dining

  • Modern wellness spaces

  • Sleek design

  • Better music

  • A true "you do you" mentality

Want to wear shorts to dinner? Go for it.

Want to wear a tuxedo? Go for it.

Don't feel like going to dinner at all? That's fine too.

The ships feel more like a trendy hotel in Miami that somehow floats through the Caribbean.

Why Adults-Only Changes Everything

The adults-only atmosphere completely changes the onboard experience.

It's not because kids are bad. We all love them.

But the vibe shifts when everyone onboard chose to be there for themselves.

People sleep later.

Dinner feels more relaxed.

People actually talk to each other.

The nightlife feels more sophisticated.

The entire experience feels more intentional.

What's Included on Virgin Voyages?

One of the smartest things Virgin did was eliminate many of the annoying upcharges that plague traditional cruise lines.

Included in your fare:

  • Wi-Fi

  • Basic beverages

  • Group fitness classes

  • Specialty dining

Most cruise lines advertise low fares and then charge extra for everything once you're onboard.

Virgin includes more upfront, which makes the pricing feel much less nickel-and-dime.

The Food Is Why People Become Lifelong Fans

This is where people either become lifelong Virgin fans or start planning their next cruise before they've even left the ship.

Virgin got rid of the traditional cruise buffet.

Instead, they created The Galley.

I like to call it a glorified food court, but in the best possible way.

Everything is made fresh to order.

You'll find:

  • Bakery items

  • Deli sandwiches

  • Paninis

  • Noodles

  • Tacos

  • Burgers

  • Sushi

  • Fresh salads

Instead of sitting under heat lamps, your food is prepared when you order it.

Specialty Dining Without Extra Charges

Virgin's restaurant lineup includes:

  • The Wake (steakhouse)

  • Gunbae (Korean BBQ)

  • Pink Agave (elevated Mexican)

  • Extra Virgin (fresh Italian)

  • Test Kitchen

  • Vegetarian-forward dining options

  • Sushi

  • Mediterranean cuisine

Unlike most cruise lines, you don't pay extra to dine at these restaurants.

There are a few premium "treat yourself" menu items available, but the restaurants themselves are included.

Why Test Kitchen Is So Unique

I'll be honest.

I didn't love Test Kitchen at first.

I have what I call a kid palate. Give me chicken fingers and fries and I'm happy.

But after 52 cruises, I've completely fallen in love with it.

The restaurant presents dishes centered around featured ingredients and reveals the culinary story behind each plate.

The entire venue feels like a laboratory dedicated to food experimentation.

It's one of the coolest dining concepts at sea.

Who Is Virgin Voyages Perfect For?

Couples

Virgin is fantastic for couples looking for a more elevated and relaxed vacation experience.

Girls Trips

Every year I host Girls Gone Cruising, and it's one of my favorite trips of the year.

We laugh nonstop, make amazing memories, and have an absolute blast.

Solo Travelers

Virgin does an incredible job with solo travelers.

From day one, they invite solo sailors to meet-and-greet events and group dinners, making it easy to connect with other travelers.

Millennials and Gen X Travelers

Virgin especially appeals to travelers who want:

  • Great food

  • Modern design

  • Relaxation

  • Social experiences

  • A more contemporary vacation

People Who Say "I'm Not a Cruise Person"

Ironically, these are often the people who end up loving Virgin the most.

Who Might Not Love Virgin Voyages?

Virgin isn't perfect for everyone.

You may want to consider other cruise lines if:

  • You regularly travel with children

  • You want water slides and large water parks

  • You love traditional cruise activities

  • You enjoy art auctions

  • You prefer giant buffets

  • You want Broadway-style productions every night

Virgin's entertainment is modern, immersive, and very different from traditional cruising.

The Entertainment Is Unlike Any Other Cruise Line

Since Virgin Voyages was founded by Richard Branson, music is deeply woven into the onboard experience.

Expect:

  • Live bands

  • Solo musicians

  • DJs

  • Theme parties

  • Pop-up performances

  • Karaoke

  • Private karaoke rooms

  • Dance parties

  • Secret entertainment experiences

The energy is always there, but it never feels forced.

Is Virgin Voyages Just One Big Party?

This is probably the biggest misconception.

Can you party?

Absolutely.

Can you also spend your day reading in a hammock, enjoying the spa, doing sunrise yoga, and quietly watching the ocean?

Absolutely.

Virgin gives you options.

That's what makes it special.

What Age Group Cruises on Virgin Voyages?

Another huge misconception is that Virgin is only for influencers in their 20s.

Not even close.

You'll find travelers in their:

  • 30s

  • 40s

  • 50s

  • 60s

  • 70s

  • 80s and beyond

The common denominator isn't age.

It's mindset.

People onboard generally want:

  • Good food

  • Good drinks

  • Good design

  • Good entertainment

  • A modern vacation experience

Is Virgin Voyages Worth It?

For the right traveler?

Absolutely.

I wouldn't have sailed 52 times if it wasn't.

If you value:

  • Experiences over gimmicks

  • Incredible food

  • Modern design

  • Adults-only vacations

  • Relaxed luxury

  • A vacation that feels elevated without being stuffy

Virgin Voyages delivers.

The biggest thing Virgin nailed is this:

They made cruising feel cool again.

And the people who become the most obsessed with Virgin are often the people who were the most skeptical before trying it.

Why I'm Personally Obsessed With Virgin Voyages

I've been sailing Virgin since their very first sailing from the United States.

I fell in love immediately, even though that first sailing was admittedly a bit of a hot mess.

Since then, I've sailed:

  • The Caribbean

  • The Mediterranean

  • Greece

  • Iceland

  • The Southern Caribbean

  • The Panama Canal

I've sailed on all four Virgin Voyages ships and experienced nearly every cabin category.

I've also been recognized as one of Virgin Voyages' top-selling travel advisors for four consecutive years.

So when I tell you I love this cruise line, it comes from firsthand experience.

After 52 sailings in five years, I still get excited every time I step onboard.

And that's why I want everyone to experience it for themselves.

You may tell me, "Nope, Samantha, I hated it."

Or you may tell me, "Samantha, I'm officially in the cult now."

Either way, I want to hear about it.
