The Cruise Mistakes Everyone Makes (and the Cruise Line That Changed Everything)

By Samantha | Talk Travel with Samantha

Welcome back to Talk Travel with Samantha, powered by Fabulous Adventures Travel — the show where we help you travel smarter, vacation harder, and avoid vacation disasters before they happen.

I’m Samantha, your travel insider, cruise addict, and professional overpacker.

(Just don’t tell anyone about the professional overpacker part.)

This week we’re diving headfirst into one of my favorite topics: cruising. I love it. I love cruising.

Let’s talk travel.

The Biggest Cruise Mistakes People Make

Mistake #1: Booking Based Only on Price

I cannot tell you the amount of people that come to me and say:

"Oh my gosh, I saw this cruise for $399!"

And they lose all common sense.

They’re like, "Look how cheap this is!"

And I’m like:

"No, no, no, no, no. That's not cheap, my friends."

It's cheap to start, but then you haven’t added gratuities, Wi-Fi, drink packages, excursions, specialty dining, and suddenly that “cheap” cruise costs more than a luxury vacation.

The cruise wasn't cheap.

The advertisement was.

Please, for the love of everything, don’t just look at price.

Many cruise lines have different package levels where one might include drinks and Wi-Fi, another might include gratuities and excursions too. Look at the actual out-of-pocket cost.

Because I promise you:

That $399 cruise is probably ending up closer to $1,000–$2,000.

And $1,000 is me being nice.

Mistake #2: Picking the Wrong Cruise Line

Not every cruise line is for everybody.

Just like not every travel agent is created equal, not every cruise line is created equal.

It’s a personality fit.

Some are family chaos.

Some are party ships.

Some are luxury floating country clubs.

And some are so boring you’re in bed by 5:00 p.m.

That might work for some people.

That’s not everyone’s vibe.

You have to match the cruise line to your personality.

Mistake #3: Booking the Cheapest Cabin

Listen, I get it.

You want to get on the cruise, so you grab the cheapest cabin available.

Interior cabins are fine…

Until you realize:

  • You’re claustrophobic

  • Your spouse snores

  • You have no clue if it’s 3:00 a.m. or Tuesday

I’m not kidding.

You wake up and suddenly think:

"Did I miss breakfast?"

"Did I miss dinner?"

"What day is it?"

Now, I also know people who absolutely love interior cabins.

They sleep better.

They're usually in the middle of the ship, which means less movement.

Some people swear they'll never sail any other way.

But know yourself.

Because saving money isn't worth seven nights of:

"Why did I book this?"

Mistake #4: Flying In The Same Day

I cannot tell you the amount of clients that fly in the same day.

Do you want to risk it?

Sure.

By all means.

But I highly recommend not doing it.

One delayed flight and suddenly your cruise is leaving without you.

This is how vacations become documentaries.

Fly in at least one day early.

Or get travel insurance.

We'll save the insurance conversation for another episode.

The Cruise Line That Changed Everything

For years, cruising followed the same formula:

  • Buffets

  • Casinos

  • Formal nights

  • Announcements every six minutes

  • Photographers attacking you at dinner

Then somebody said:

"What if cruising actually felt cool again?"

Enter Virgin Voyages.

Love them or hate them, you cannot deny this:

Virgin Voyages disrupted the cruise industry.

Why?

Adults Only

No kids.

They said adults-only and meant it.

Suddenly millennials and Gen X travelers who swore they’d never cruise again started paying attention.

Goodbye Giant Buffets

I’m just going to say it:

I hate buffets.

I once watched a woman at a cruise buffet scoop guacamole, realize it didn't all come off the serving spoon, and then use her finger to push the rest onto her plate.

I nearly died.

I left my food there and walked away.

That was it.

Buffets and I have trust issues now.

Virgin replaced giant buffet madness with made-to-order eateries.

It feels more like a boutique hotel and less like cafeteria warfare.

Specialty Dining Is Included

Virgin changed expectations because specialty dining isn’t an upcharge.

No extra fee.

No sitting in the same dining room every night.

You can go enjoy:

  • Mexican

  • Italian

  • Steak

  • Korean BBQ

  • Test Kitchen

  • Razzle Dazzle

Without paying extra.

The Modern Design

Virgin ships feel like Instagram had a baby with a luxury hotel.

Everything feels modern.

Cabins have iPads controlling everything.

The ships are sleek and upscale.

No Constant Announcements

The captain welcomes you onboard.

And then silence.

If you hear from the captain again?

You probably need to grab your life jacket.

No cruise director screaming:

"Who's ready to party?"

No nonstop interruptions.

Just vibes.

Cruise Myths & Hot Takes

Hot Take #1: Drink Packages Aren’t Always Worth It

People panic-buy drink packages like it’s a Costco apocalypse.

Let’s do the math:

If drinks cost around $14 each and the package costs $80+ daily…

You need six or more drinks every day just to break even.

By the end of the week, most people are tired and slowing down.

That’s what cruise lines count on.

Now, I understand why people love drink packages.

Everything feels all-inclusive.

You already paid for it.

No surprises later.

But personally?

I prefer Virgin's Bar Tab approach.

You decide:

"I'm spending $300."

"I'm spending $500."

And if you have money left over?

Congratulations.

You're now buying drinks for everybody around you and becoming everyone’s new best friend.

Hot Take #2: Bigger Ships Aren’t Always Better

Mega ships are cool.

They're like floating cities.

But sometimes they feel like you're trapped inside a shopping mall on water.

If you have kids?

Amazing.

You may literally never see them.

But adults-only travel is different.

Bigger isn’t always better.

It's personality.

It's vibe.

Hot Take #3: Cruise Loyalty Actually Matters

If you cruise more than once:

Loyalty programs matter.

People overlook them constantly.

Perks can include:

  • Free drinks

  • Happy hours

  • Extra benefits

  • Exclusive offers

Those things add up over time.

Why Travel Agents Matter

Technology was supposed to replace travel agents.

Then cruising got complicated.

Now suddenly you're asking:

  • Do I want luxury?

  • Do I want a deal?

  • Do I want vibe?

  • Do I want an interior cabin?

  • Do I want Mega Rockstar?

  • Which ship fits me?

That's where travel advisors come in.

We help match personalities to experiences.

We help avoid expensive mistakes.

We know what cabins to avoid.

We know which itineraries are overrated.

We know which cruise lines quietly nickel-and-dime you.

And the best part?

We're free.

You don't pay extra.

Final Thought

Before you book your next cruise:

Don’t just look at price.

Look at value.

Look at experience.

Most importantly:

Book the vacation you actually want.

And if you've never cruised before?

Maybe this is your year.

Thank you for joining me on Talk Travel with Samantha, powered by Fabulous Adventures Travel.

And remember:

Travel smarter.

Vacation harder.

And make fewer regrettable buffet decisions.
