Sandals Saint Vincent Review: I Loved Everything but This

What if I told you there was a Caribbean island where the loudest thing you’ll hear is a tree frog? Where rainforest waterfalls are minutes away, black sand beaches meet crystal-clear water and one of the newest luxury all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean has quietly become one of the most talked-about places to stay? Forget crowded beaches. Forget where your next-door neighbor told you to go. Let’s talk about Sandals Saint Vincent.

I put this together while I was still there, on the day we left, so everything here is fresh. By the end, you’ll know whether this adults-only resort deserves a spot on your travel list, which room level I’d actually book and the one thing I didn’t love.

Where Is Saint Vincent?

Most people know Jamaica, St. Lucia, Aruba and the Bahamas. But have you heard of Saint Vincent? You’ve probably heard of the Grenadines, and Saint Vincent is one of the 32 islands and cays that make up Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, at the southern end of the Windward Islands.

Unlike many Caribbean islands that have become heavily developed, Saint Vincent still feels wonderfully authentic: lush rainforests, volcanic mountains, waterfalls, rivers, black and white sand beaches, colorful fishing villages and incredibly friendly locals. The island is dominated by a volcano, which gives it dramatic scenery you simply don’t find on other Caribbean islands.

Lush, volcanic and still wonderfully undeveloped: Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Pirates of the Caribbean Fans, Take Note

If you’re a huge Pirates of the Caribbean fan like me, this is your place. On a boat tour, our guides showed us the rock from one of the opening scenes where the skeletons hang. (Disney left them there for a long time, until someone climbed up and stole them. I have no idea how.) Then we went into the bay they took over for filming, where they put stone facades on the buildings. Some of them are still there, and the best way to see it all is from the water, so I highly suggest a boat tour.

Why Sandals Chose Saint Vincent

Sandals didn’t build here by accident; they wanted somewhere different. They nailed it. The resort sits in Buccament Bay on roughly 50 acres, bordered by rainforest, a river and a secluded cove, with cliffs rising up on either side, covered in lush vegetation and palm trees. At times I just looked around and said, “Wow.” It feels like Hawaii meets the Caribbean.

The arrival alone feels different. Instead of endless hotel towers, you’re surrounded by mountains, and because we booked a butler room, we came in by boat. It feels a little 007. It feels a little White Lotus. Butler-level rooms include the boat transfer; Club Level and the lead-in rooms include a shuttle transfer instead.

Don’t Spend Your Whole Vacation at the Resort

We were only there four nights, which gives you three full days, and I’m so bummed we didn’t see more of the island. If we’d had seven nights, I probably would have spent three of those days off the resort. The resort is incredible, but the island is phenomenal, so book at least one island tour:

  • Dark View Falls

  • The Vermont Nature Trail

  • Fort Charlotte

  • The Botanical Gardens

  • Local fishing villages, which we saw from the boat

  • Bequia: the closest neighboring island, about nine miles away, and gorgeous from the air as you fly in. You can take the ferry, or book an excursion through Sandals’ Island Routes. Most visitors who island-hop say Bequia ends up being one of their favorite days of the whole vacation. We didn’t make it this time.

Which Room Level Should You Book?

While I’m “on vacation,” I’m never truly on vacation. I’m always doing research, so I toured a bunch of rooms.

Lead-In Rooms

The lead-in room (no Club Level, no butler) was gorgeous and very well appointed: beautiful tile floors, an unreal bathroom with a huge tub and a huge shower, and a balcony with a soaking tub. But you don’t get much extra at that level.

Club Level: The Sweet Spot

At Sandals Saint Vincent, I would 1,000% book Club Level. You get access to the club lounge around the clock, with drinks and snacks, and a concierge when it’s staffed. You also get elevated drinks, including a better stocked bar in your room. For most people, this is the sweet spot.

Butler Level

With butler level, you get a butler who works with you. Let me squash one thing: it’s not like hiring a butler for your house, waiting outside your door for your beck and call. If that’s what you want, know that you’re not getting it. If that’s what you’re afraid of, don’t stress; you don’t have to entertain anyone. Trust me, they’re very busy, which brings me to my biggest complaint.

Watch One Word When You Book

Here’s the easiest way to mess up a Sandals booking: the room names. Two categories can look almost identical, like a one-bedroom butler suite with a media room and a tranquility soaking tub versus a one-bedroom butler suite with just the tranquility tub, and that one missing phrase is why the price is different. The names are long, and they pile on words until you’re confused. If you book on your own, read every word. Or let a travel advisor who knows the ins and outs do it for you.

My Honest Take on the Butler

This was my first time using a butler at a Sandals. I’ve stayed at many Sandals and gone Club Level, which I think is fantastic, so my expectations were very high. I’m easy: I want breakfast delivered in the morning, I want you to remember what you told me you’d do, and I want things a little faster than over an hour.

I think island time got involved. (I also call it Virgin time. I love Virgin Voyages and sell a ton of it, but they live on their own schedule too.) Our arrival was amazing: greeted White Lotus style, checked in at the club and walked to our room by our butler. The room was stunning. The bathroom had three showers, one massive tub, a get-ready space and two sinks, and I want my entire house to have that bathroom. On the way, we’d ordered food at the jerk shack, and our butler said she’d bring it to us. An hour later, we had to call. When the jerk chicken finally showed up, it was cold.

That set the tone. We never got an update on our spa appointment, the time was wrong, and the preferences form I filled out before we arrived didn’t seem to have been looked at. I expected a butler to be more attentive and to know more about us. So, honestly? If I were advising a client on this resort, I don’t know that I’d say the butler was worth it.

What a Butler Is Actually Good For

  • Beach and pool chairs: this is the big one. The Beach Club Parasol has a gorgeous infinity pool overlooking the beach and the water, and not a lot of chairs. It’s like the Hunger Games. Our butler got there super early to save us spots, with a cooler set up for when we arrived. If you don’t have a butler, I hear the trick is to be there by 6:00 a.m.

  • Bringing you drinks and food, in your room or wherever you are. We had food brought to us at the pool.

  • Dinner reservations and excursions.

  • Unpacking for you, if you ask.

Every Sandals offers butler-level rooms, not just this one. If a butler still sounds odd to you, know that it’s much more hands-off than you’d think. And if you’d rather skip the butler, go Club Level.

The Overwater Villas

Not a lot of people know Sandals Saint Vincent has overwater villas, nestled in a corner of the resort. I toured one, and they’re spectacular: two levels, glass floors where you can watch fish swim beneath you, two outdoor decks, a ladder down into the water and soaking tubs outside. They come with a butler and are the most luxurious accommodations at the resort. When I looked up August pricing, they were about $3,000 a night.

Sometimes luxury is simply a quiet sunset, with no crowds around you.

What to Eat, Drink and Do at Night

  • Buccan: one of the standouts, and it’s only here, with dishes inspired by Saint Vincent and cooked over an open fire.

  • Gatsu Gatsu: there are versions at other Sandals resorts, but this one was really great.

  • Nightlife: there’s a rum bar, a different theme and a different band every night, a silent disco (so much fun) and even a movie night. You’re not bringing down the house, but don’t go to bed too early.

Good-to-Know Tips

  • The beach is white sand, by design. Saint Vincent’s natural beaches are black sand, so Sandals brought in white sand for its beach. Black sand can make the water look dark, but it isn’t. On a private boat tour we walked a gorgeous black sand beach, and the water around the island is some of the clearest I’ve ever seen. You can see right to the bottom.

  • Bring a plug adapter. Most Sandals resorts have plenty of American outlets. This one had very few, and the outlets by the bed were British style. Leave your hair dryer at home and use theirs.

  • Check flights carefully. In summer, flights in and out don’t run every day. In high season, roughly October through spring, there are daily options.

  • Stay seven nights. Four wasn’t enough. Seven gives you enough time to enjoy the resort and see the island, without getting bored of the food.

Is Sandals Saint Vincent Worth It?

This place was phenomenal, and I was super bummed to leave. I didn’t love the butler experience, which makes me sad because I really wanted to, but I love this resort, and I would 1,000% come back.

The lesson I took home: luxury isn’t always marble floors and giant lobbies. Sometimes it’s silence. It’s hearing birds and tree frogs instead of traffic (I wasn’t sure what that sound was until we started seeing the frogs on the pathways at night), and watching the sunset without hundreds of people around you. If you’re looking for a honeymoon, an anniversary trip or simply somewhere to reconnect, this island deserves a serious look.

If this has you dreaming about your own escape, my team at Fabulous Adventures Travel would love to help you choose the right room category (word by word) and plan the island days that make the trip.
