Why Iceland Is One of My Favorite Places I've Ever Traveled
I've been lucky enough to visit some incredible places around the world, but Iceland completely surprised me. Honestly, it feels like another planet.
Where else can you drive past glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls, black sand beaches, steaming geothermal fields, Icelandic horses, and sheep that are literally everywhere? It's one of those destinations that makes every mile of the journey just as exciting as the destination itself. Once you visit Iceland, every other road trip might seem a little boring.
Nature Is the Main Attraction
One of the biggest things that surprised me about Iceland is just how beautiful—and green—it is. Despite its name, it isn't covered in ice. The air feels different, the water tastes incredible, and everything feels unbelievably clean.
I'm not a nature girl. I don't camp, and I'm honestly not even much of a hiker. But Iceland changed that. I wanted to be outside all the time. The scenery is absolutely magical, and everywhere you look there's something worth stopping to admire.
My Best Advice: Rent a Car
If you're comfortable driving, rent a car.
It was one of the best decisions we made because it gave us the freedom to stop whenever something caught our attention. Whether it was waterfalls, lava fields from a recent volcanic eruption, or incredible viewpoints, we could simply pull over and experience it.
I honestly think Iceland is one of the best countries in the world for a road trip. Just remember that once you leave town, there isn't much between destinations, so plan accordingly.
Don't Miss the Golden Circle
If it's your first visit to Iceland, you absolutely need to experience the Golden Circle.
We snowmobiled on a glacier, watched geysers erupt, visited Gullfoss Waterfall, and stood between two continental plates. Every stop was incredible, and it's one of those excursions I'd recommend to just about everyone visiting Iceland.
Is the Blue Lagoon Worth It?
Absolutely.
Yes, it's touristy. Yes, it's expensive. But I still think it's worth experiencing.
I chose the Retreat Spa instead of the main Blue Lagoon because it was quieter and much more private. Having dedicated spa facilities, peaceful geothermal pools, and plenty of room to relax made the experience even more special. If it's within your budget, I'd definitely recommend upgrading.
My Favorite Surprise: Diamond Beach
One place I couldn't wait to visit was Diamond Beach.
The first evening I arrived, I was honestly disappointed. It looked nothing like the photos I'd seen, so I convinced everyone in my car to stop again the next morning before we left.
I'm so glad we did.
It was everything I had imagined. The icebergs scattered across the black sand looked absolutely incredible, and it became one of my favorite stops of the entire trip. If you go, I highly recommend visiting in the morning.
The Moment I'll Never Forget
If I had to pick one memory that perfectly captures Iceland, it would be sitting in a Zodiac boat in Glacier Lagoon.
We waited quietly as ancient ice cracked off the glacier while seals swam nearby and enormous icebergs floated past us. It was one of those rare moments where everyone simply stopped talking because we were all taking it in.
That experience reminded me just how small we are compared to the incredible world around us. It's truly one of my biggest "pinch me" travel moments.
My Final Thoughts
Iceland is genuinely one of my favorite destinations I've ever visited.
Whether you're driving the Ring Road, soaking in the Blue Lagoon, exploring Glacier Lagoon, or watching icebergs wash onto Diamond Beach, every day feels like a new adventure.
Some destinations impress you. Others change how you see the world.
For me, Iceland does both. If you've been thinking about going, don't wait—I truly don't think you'll regret it.
